FACTOIDS  - Update 1-1-2007

All references to OWNER HANDLER are made expecting that those individuals will meet the
definition of "FAMILY" per Chapter 14, Section 2, paragraph 4, Page 16, January 2005."

OPEN ALL-AGE - 35+% of all places go to OWNER HANDLED dogs.

AMATEUR ALL-AGE - 76% of all places go to OWNER HANDLED dogs, 10% of all places go
to dogs where the handler has not been identified, 1.5% go to dogs with designated handlers
& 12.5% go to dogs that have OWNERS with different SURNAMES. If a handler is in the category of
Unidentified, Designated or Owners with different Surnames they receive no handler credit.

DERBY - 48+% of all places go to OWNER HANDLED dogs.

Of those OWNER HANDLED (76%) dogs in the AMATEUR ALL-AGE the average is 308
handlers placing 369 dogs.  The dog breeds placing are 93.5% Labrador, 4.5% Golden Retrievers &
2% Chesapeake Bay Retrievers.  Breed Specialty Trials have been included. Repeat handlers are
20% of the total handlers in the full year samples that were taken. Samples are such that there were
no repeat dogs.  52% of the entries receive no placings during those sample years.

NO HANDLER SHOULD HAVE TO BE ON THE LINE COMPETING UNDER JUDGES
THAT HAVE NOT PLACED A DOG IN A TRIAL IN THOSE STAKES.  ADDITIONALLY, NO
JUDGE SHOULD ACCEPT ASSIGNMENTS OF MORE THAN 1 STAKE FOR EVERY
TIME THAT THEY PLACE IN THAT STAKE.  (This would include the combination of the
All-Age stakes & using the excess from the Amateur to fill in the Derby.)There would still be a
surplus of QUALIFIED handlers available to judge stakes.

The MATH of 1 to 1:

35% (Open) + 76% (Amateur) + 48% (Derby)=159% x 4 places per stake= 6.36 Places per
Trial = 6.36 potential judges per Trial.  From the 35% (Open) + 76% (Amateur) x 4 places
per Stake = 4.44 potential judges per trial - 2 Open, 2 Amateur or .44 x 215 = 94 extra
All-Age judges per year to use as excess for Derby. NOTE: All Age placing competitors that
do not compete in the Derby should not judge the Derby Stake.
If you add the 10% unidentified handlers in the Amateur stake & the 10% unidentified
handlers (estimated) in the Open & Derby there are 20% x 4 places per stake or an
additional .80 persons per trial (If they filled out their entry correctly) for a total of 6.36 + .80 =
7.16 potential judges per trial.  .36 x 215 trials per year = 77 extra judges per year or 1.16 x
215 trials per year = 249 extra judges per year

During data gathering a 7 year sample (All-Age stakes only) was taken to show the
involvement of AKC Approved judges in handling dogs & the level of ownership. The
following table shows %'s for those who are Owner Handlers.

EXPERIENCE                % OF AKC Judges                 % of Dogs placed
           0-9 Years                                25                                        20.33
           9-18 Years                              34                                        29.56
         18-25 Years                              16                                        16.56
           25+ Years                                25                                        33.55

As this is the FACTOID page & not the OPINION page you may draw your own conclusion. I
believe these % differences are significant.

Of all the dogs Owner Handled during Phase I & Phase II (Derby) of the data gathering 69%
placed in the All-Age Stakes.
